Ultrasonic
« on: February 07, 2017, 08:28:23 pm »
I know that most of you have heard about using ultrasonic cleaners for carbs. Thinking I may look into buying one just not sure witch ones are good. How many of you are actually using one? 2+2 gum cutter has always worked fine for me. Have been seeing a white film in some of the carbs I have been working on. I would assume it is from the ethanol. Just what to make sure they are clean.

I have HF USC about 8 yrs. old.  However it hasn't had a lot of use 25-30 carbs.  I'm happy w/it.  Simple Green & water 50/50.

I have a Harbor Freight also and a L&R ultrasonic cleaner.   The L&R is probably better than then Harbor Freight but it was a lot more expensive.
The Harbor Freight seems to work fine though and I have no issues with it.

Just be careful because some cleaners are caustic to aluminum and will pit a carb in an ultrasonic cleaner.

I've had one of the tiny HF ultrasonic cleaners for about 10 years.  Probably cleaned at least 100 carbs in it.  Works well.  The cycle timer is annoying.  IIRC, it shuts off after something like 2 minutes.  5 or 6 cycles gets everything good and hot, and usually is enough to shake loose the hidden crap in the carb.  The model I have is really too small, especially since I work on Tillotson HL carbs for my old saws quite a bit.  The fluid BARELY covers the carb body for those big 'uns.  I keep meaning to replace it with something bigger (either a used dental unit on CL or something from Amazon or eBay).  Low enough priority that thought and funds never get directed towards it however.  This is the first time I've thought about replacing my USC in many months...

The digital ultrasonic on ebay looks interesting.  10 inches deep is plenty big enough for what we do and is heated.   Price is right.

That is what I was thinking as well. Think I may get one. Liked it a little more for the metal outside then the HF plastic outside.
