I drill them and knock out with a punch, they are soft. Make sure the bit is perfectly centered and don't drill into the bar.

You'll know when you hit the bar if you drill too deep. I have punched them out with a breaker also.

My question was misleading, I am interested in how you put the new rivets back in, lam bars or sprocket nose bars. How you hold it tight and get the rivet peened over. Sorry about that.

To get them out I usually punch them out with my chain breaker.

I place the bar rivet over the hole in the anvil and knock the rivet out with a punch and a 2 lb hammer

I have driven them out with my chain breaker - it has a special anvil for this.

I have replaced them by flattening them with a ball peen hammer, with the other side of the bar resting on a block of steel, or the anvil portion of a vise.

Note that Oregon recommends driving the rivet out from one side only when replacing a sprocket nose assembly (see attached).

I will have to give it a try that way. And see if I can get some better results. So does the flat side go down to the anvil/vice and the small side get hammered over or is it vice versa.
