Are you using a bench mount breaker? If you have to pull that hard something is wrong. Either the preset is riding on the shoulder of the anvil or the punch is not centered on the rivet. It should be a smooth pull without undue pressure, after all the rivets are aluminum. The punch can also break from side loading if the driver slips into the channel, make sure the right one is selected for the chain being broken.

the rivets are not aluminum. aluminum does not spark while grinding. if it makes a difference i have been using old stock windsor chain.

thanks Kevin, thats what i attempted today but i was trying to drill the old punch body. that ain't happening, they are over hard, can't drill. thats why they break.
wish i knew what size stock member joe used, i seem to have nothing laying around that size.

If you buy new punches put them in the wife's oven for a cleaning cycle. That will soften them a little before use

I used to have them baileys ones bust on a whim. If you wasnt completely straight on and chain moved the tips would explode being so brittle.  Havent ever had to replace any since Joe from India sent me his redneck made ones to try.

What ones you having do this aftermarket ones like baileys, harbor freight, etc?
