Something I noticed. Work chains top 3 are all from Ohio and we all know each other.

Top 5

Shaun  guessing hand filed with those things that holds chains? Something like that homelite guy makes?

Kevin I filed my chain on the  bar on the chainsaw with bar in vice. Like I do every hand filed chain for builds.

Jim uses a swing arm

CG Kimmons   I dont know the state or how?

ch74 Fla   ?

Any other filers want to share info?  I can take a pic of mine later.

Chain tight. Brake on. Big screwdriver in lower bar between it and chain.
yes, I use the small aluminum vise that Mike makes. I like it very much.

On your race one. Tunneling under cutter. Did you use the 1/8" file or did you find a file smaller or used something else.  I know I used 1/8" on full size.
Diamond bits and a dremel

Never thought of that.  8)

I took pics of the broken chain and yours so far.  Was out shooting sons Christmas gift with him and grab some quick pics.  They suk. But you did say ok too right.

I hand filed mine on the saw in the vice. That is how I sharpen all my chains. I like to try and keep things the same. I feel that it better to make small changes on a chain that way you actually know what each different thing does. ch74 you should be well pleased with your chain. To have a round filed chain cut like that is great. On my square chain I sharpen the tooth out at the tip of the bar, where the tooth just starts over the round edge of the tip. Helped me to get the file in there and not get down in the straps so bad.
FEAR NO TREE. FEAR GOD.

jmester. Thanks a million i did something diffrent with the raker also i used my round file and tunneled under it , Hard to explain it would b easier to see a pic.
On my 450p i took a old file and a peice of sand paper and chucked the file in a drill and smoothed it out some running the sand paper up and down it , then i filed the chain with my oregon bar mounted guide, and used valve lapping compound on it and OMG it was a monster. It was crazy shinny and cut so smooooooth. Also on that chain i clean the gullets out like i did on the work chain i sent in. Its fast i have cut over 14 trees down and cut up with that 450p chain and haven't even touched with a file since the valve compound and cleaning the gullets.

I filed mine in my fg2 with the top part(file holder) removed.  First round chain I filed square.  Tried to follow all the pros(squarefile,mdavlee,cut4fun,moparmyway)tips/methods.  I've got a lot to learn but it was fun as hell.  Wish I would've had more time with it.  Big thanks to moparmyway and of course cut4fun and all who helped.

Count me in for the next one, I'm hooked.

happy Christmas everyone.

learned a few things with my chain when it was compared to others times.

i lightened my chain as much as possible. the rivs ground down; the rakers thinned; the straps around the rivets; 45'd the back of the cutters; line ground the side of the cutter.  lots of metal fell off.  edit: forgot to mention, thinned the underside "drive" part of chain.

left the round cutting edge as it was from the factory, did not put a file to the tooth. angled the rakers down a bit.  (maybe too much, hahaha).

don't think with my chain chip clearing helped much, nothing but air behind the cutter.  time was on par with the stock chain.

maybe with more power, it would be a tad faster, but i don't think by much of anything. it's all in the cutter i am thinking?

maybe this will help someone.  posted a pic earlier of the chain.  hope cut4 can post a better one.

be careful with my chain with higher power kevin.  please check the rivs before you decide give it a go.

hiatus

Sorry guys horrible pics. I just cant figure that crap out. Not enough light, to much flash. Yada yada story of my life on pics like these.

Few I got today while out in barn before shooting today.

If I get wrong chain with initials just let me know and I will fix.

If you use light besides the flash it usually does better. Squarefiles chain looks wicked.

My chains were sharpened on just the bar with a sprocket. I used a small pipe & screech to tighten. On the work chain I round filed the cutter back then squared it up. The first few I did free hand then I did the rest with a granberg G-108. The depth gauges were then set to about .020.
