The oil pump is the limiter. There's just not enough oil output for the 32" bar unless you are in absolutely clean green wood.

Generally, i think that your logic is sound.  Part of the chain choice also depends on how much you plan to have in the cut at one time.  If the full bar is buried in the log, a skip-tooth chain will have fewer cutters engaged and less drag on the powerhead.  It will also help clear out the chips.

Some guys say that they like longer bars just for the reach, so they don't have to bend over as far, or get as close to a gnarly log.  E.g. they have a 28 inch bar, but only 18 inches of it is normally in the wood, so full comp chain works fine for them.  But a longer bar also affects the balance and handling of the saw, so there is some personal preference and trade offs involved.
