Clamp on sharpeners
« on: February 16, 2015, 09:35:41 am »
Who has experience with these? I generally hand file my chains but lately I've been dropping my 24" chains off to the local hardware for sharpening. I've never used one of the clamp to the bar sharpeners but see them in stores. I'm thinking I could sharpen chains quickly with one. I'm just an amatuer firewood cutter. I generally carry extra chains to the woods in case I have a "son of a b***h" moment.

Forget clamp on. Best bang for the buck is the Stihl 2 in 1 guide. Sold 173 last year without 1 complaint.  Within  10 minutes you will have a chain equal to a new chain. Shop grinding is down 40 per month because of selling them. It does tooth and raker in the same pass.  Very simple to use.

The second pfer guide is the one Stihl sells. Easiest guide for the beginner to use.

I have three of the Oregon 557849 Professional Bar Mounted Chainsaw Chain Sharpener Filing Guides.

One for each file size. They work very well for me.

Local stihl dealer has them for a descent price. How do they differ from a file with a guide? I dont file my rakers often. I have a depth gauge and usually my rakers are fine

You can watch You Tube videos but I'm not so sure those guys actually use them. They don't look very smooth acting on the vids.

I use the other hand and pull them through the tooth and there's no chatter.

There's a cheaper Oregon model and the clamp is not as nice. I consider the clamp important. The cheap small clamp one is made in China. Look at the pictures carefully or come by the house and use them.
