Back a few years ago I just had cheaper, single action, hedge trimmers. Anything over 1/4" they wouldn't cut . . .

If I wanted to do some real hedge cutting - I just used a chainsaw. It did the hedge as it was. I didn't need any attachment.

I remember using one saw a lot and it was 3/8 LP. I also had some .325 saws and I did hedges with one of them a few times.

My older son had some arborvitae to trim back a good bit last fall and he just used the Poulan 3500 with regular 3/8" chain on it. The shrubs look OK to me.

I now have a Stihl HS80 and a Echo hedge trimmer to do all my trimming with. They get the job done.

Never seen anything like it.   I have an echo hedge trimmer that I keep and use in town.   As long as I stay on top of the trimming it is quick and easy.   I work on them all the time at work and the biggest problem I see is the blades sticking together because they were not lubed or cleaned for storage.

There are times when doing privet with a chainsaw that the stems accumulate under the chain cover and you have to stop and clear out under the cover.
