Steve, you ever pay attention to all those chains Wayne and Joe carrys to the races?  Lot of chains to choose from.

Have you ever noticed how a chain can look like it should be fast and finished up turn out to be cull and a chain that looks like nothing and has had very little done to it just fly in the wood.

Yes i have noticed how many they have. Wayne opened a wood box up at jackson and i would bet there was 20 chains in that box. A good looking chain does not mean its fast ;)

You can file it both directions .In to out or out to in .It's just easier for me to see in to out most times .You have to watch the hook, some but not much .Too much beak it doesn't cut right .

Now I don't file square unless it's my version of a race chain which is neither slowest or yet the fastest .

Oregon is most likely the easiest to file and Stihl is so hard you don't get much milage out of a file .

It's usually easier if you go round to square is first take a good flat file and remove all the round first then reshape it with a multi  bevel file .

I take the gullet back to just past the side plate. I was doing this on work chains. a little beak is better than being too high. Too high won't cut near as good. I was square filing work chains then bought a grinder then sold the grinder so I'm back to filing everything. It will make your fingers sore doing a couple 28" full comp chain in an evening.

To me it's not worth the hassel to square file for every day usage .Most of the stuff I get into is standing dead or downed stuff hard as a rock .If I were a green faller I might look at it differently though .

Like a 20 inch loop of round chisel is about 5 minutes give or take .The same in square is 20 or so .You're talking hours on a race chain .

I got to where square is right with round in filing time. It doesn't seem to dull any faster than round chisel.

I cut all day saturday with my square ground chain. I was happy with how long it did last. I was bucking up some real dirty stuff too.

I had good luck with holding a pretty good edge with a steep down angle where it was hitting the tie straps and putting a little notch in them. If I can get a picture to turn out I'll get some in a bit.
