On a square filed race chain whether its for the bikesaw or stock appearing, I like a wee little beak almost too hard to see. Also a small forward slope past verticle in the side plate.
90% of competition wood I've cut is barkless and knotless softwood along with cottonwood so a thin chain can hold a decent edge.

This was my first and only attempt at square filing, I filed this awhile ago. It seems to cut good but from looking at other photos on here its looks like I have a lot more practice to go. Sorry for the quality of the pics this is the best I could get from about 50 pics lol

Ok now if you could tell me what I am doing right & wrong. Or if I should never pick up a file again. I take criticism well lol

why are the sides of this chain so ground up and rough looking ?

It is ground up because of a thread I read on an other forum about a race chain. Not sure what I was doing just seen a pic and tried to copy. I failed lol So now i use this chain to practice square filing

From what I see of the length of your cutter bit this chain is for a stock  saw, right?
From what you ground off you didn't go far enough, also when everything is magnified it always looks rough.
You can "dog bone" the cutters gullet deeper along with the opposite tie strap to the top of the Husq letters, s and q.
Try and keep as much of the original case hardened material of the drive link around the presets rivet hub  as what's on the front and rear of the drive link. Its ok to dogbone down into the middle of the drive links, presets and tie straps. You can see and measure the factory thickness with a loose drive link or the end link on a roll of chain.
Then polish up all your grinding surfaces. So much easier when you have the whole chain disassembled.
I'd draw a diagram but I don't have a program to shrink my pics.

holmen tree........there is a freeware (general public license) program called "gimp", maybe there are others, don't know for sure.  gimp has a lot of capabilities, (maybe to many), it may work for you.

would like to learn more about this skill.

sorry to derail.  appreciate the knowhow.

Thanks Joe, I'll look into it. I had a program once that I got used to then it expired and that was it. Most sites I visit don't require pre shrinking.

Put your images up on Photo Bucket

Then link them here with the img function and they are automatically shrunk to the proper size...

I tried photo bucket a couple years ago and didn't work out for me, I'll try it again maybe the glitch is gone now. Thanks.

If the picture is on your computer then right click on the picture.
Put mouse on ( Open with).
Then left click on ( Paint)
When it opens then you can go to the top left and resize the image.  It gives you a choice of percentage or pixels.  I just use the percentage.
Then when you have resized to what you want hit the red box at top right to close and it will ask if you want to save changes and say yes.
Your image is now saved to a new size.

You may have to play with the size until you get what you want.  With the camera I have I have to take it all the way to 18 percent to get it small enough to fit the forum guide lines.

I resize to pixels. Usually 720x480 is a good size for forum uploads.
