Got my 2 loops today.  So which file to use on these?  3/16 4.8mm or find 5mm  or 13/64 5.2mm

Just saving info.

Oregon and Stihl made a 3/8 full chisel low profile chain which was poplar in the pulpcutting industry 20 plus years ago-Stihl 33 TS [Topic super] and Oregon's  76 and 77 LG. These 3/8 chains were equivalent in size between a .325 and full blown 3/8. Good smooth cutting chains and the beauty about them was you could put a full size 33RS or 72LP cutter on their smaller chassis. One of the modding tricks done in  timbersports.

As I posted a while back, when I was tech services manager for Stihl in 1989 the Stihl Swiss chain factory sent me a roll of test chain to test in northern Alberta. It was the 33 Topic Super with 33RS cutters on it, I quit working for Stihl shortly after so I never had the opportunity to see how the test panned out. I just know that chain cut like crazy. At the time all the serious timbersport saw competitors were building their chain like this so it was nothing new, Stihl just wanted to test it out in all day conditions. As a matter of fact those 33RS cutters in 1989 were the prototype of the sloped depth gauge cutters that we know today.[Oregon introduced that design originally as the LG in 1982] 33RS at the time had the straight up/down depth gauge like the Oregon 72LP,Oregon LP had the anti kickback humped drivelink and the older Stihl 33RS had theirs on top of the tie-strap directly in front of the cutters depth gauge. Now the new 33RSC3 has both of both worlds, drive link and sloped depth gauge anti kickback ramps.

Nice find!
It would be nice if Stihl would re-introduce this sawchain. The Stihl factory recommended file size for the Topic Super 3/8 chain was 11/64" [4.5mm], but good luck finding that file size. Go with a common 3/16" file which is what Oregon 76LG spec calls for. I myself and other loggers in our area used 5mm files for these two chains, 13/64 is too big.
Us loggers had a habit of breaking smaller diameter files with our hand strength ha ha, so the suppliers gave us 5mm. Full size 3/8 we used 7/32 and 13/64.

4.5 files are a regular stock item for Stihl. We have plenty on the shelf. Need some? $18.00 per dozen.
That is what we use here instead of a 3/16 when a 21 lpx gets 1/2 worn.

Thanks for the info Old Iron, it's good to see items like this still available. Now if only Stihl could bring back the Topic Super chain.

I took a bunch of chain loops in on trade on a saw and I found a loop of the old oregon 72lg that the racers like for their cutters.

I'll show a pic here so you can see the difference and why the chain makers like the older cutters.  Look closely now if you dont already know why.  ;)

I'll trade or sale this 72lg 60dl chain if anyone is interested. I hate to throw it on and use it up as a work chain if someone out there would rather make a race chain out of it.

Just to explain for those not in the know of the differences between the old LG and new stuff. First you will notice the small one barbed arrow between the rivets on the modern chain, that's the Anti-Vibe symbol for all the new Oregon chain [as of starting approx. 8-10 yrs ago ] Look close at the differences between the anti vibe cutter and the older non Anti-Vibe cutter and you will see the Anti-Vibe cutter has less material under the rear rivet [heel of the cutter] then under the front rivet [toe]. The old LG cutter has equal material under both the heel and toe.
The newer cutter is modified to tilt the cutter back a little to cut down on vibration but doesn't attack or "porpoise" the wood in the kerf as well as the old style cutter did. Also notice the ridge along the top of the side plate on the old cutter, that ridge cuts down on friction to an extent and in some of the old LG chain a sharper working corner on the cutting edge.
