Skip Tooth Advise

I have a 3/8 pitch, 32" bar. I was once told that when you get into the longer bars, you should go to a skip tooth chain. Is 32" long enough? And can anyone tell me the reason and advantages/and/or/disadvantages of the skip tooth.

What saw?   I run full skip or full comp on 32" and full skip cut great and takes less power.   But I am just a hack firewood cutter.

You have full skip and semi skip too.

at 32" it really depends on the saw which one i recommend.

75cc and down=skip.
75cc and up=full comp.

hand filing=skip
machine sharpening=full comp


skip advantages=
more chip clearance so possibly faster cutting
1/3 less cutters so faster hand filing
helps underpowered saws deal with longer bars than is normally acceptable


full comp advantages=
more cutters doing the same amount of work so stays sharp tad longer longer
less vibration

We have a 390 XP Husky. Nathaniel, I'm not sure what you mean by the "full comp". Is that a standard chain? That's what I'm thinking. So if thats the case I should have plenty of saw for either one, standard or full skip. Thanks for all the help so far.

390 i would stick with full comp(72LGX) as long as your not hand filing it.

A lot of softwood cutters like skip with the longer bars, seems to reduce clogging in the kerf. There are fewer cutters to file but require more frequent sharpening so it's a wash.

Try a loop of Oregon 72ck.  Its semi skip, 50 gauge.  If you have a 63 gauge bar use 75ck.
