Plitz Sprockets
« on: February 16, 2014, 07:16:50 am »
Is there any advantage for a wood cutter(not to be read as competitor) for switching over to these type of sprocket set-up?

I would like to change the 056 over to this type sprocket also...is there a limit on the number of 'teeth/tooth' size that should be used?
One last question....is there a formula to getting a link count for making loops after putting one of these type sprockets on a saw?

The bigger the sprocket the more torque and hp you need to turn it. It is similar to a bicycle. Yes you will get more chain speed but will need more power to pull it thought the wood. The small 7 or 8 tooth stock sprockets will have less chain speed, but will give you more power to work with. Those rims that the guy is selling will not fit over a spur drum. You will need to get a rim drum to run them if you so desire. I would also get them from Madsens and not the guy on ebay. There is a thread here some where that talks about him, in more detail. He is playing on peoples misinformation and sell hot rod saws that are just stock saws with some big rim gear. And as a rule of thumb you add one link of chain for every pin added in your sprocket. For ex. 36" stihl bar 114 link for 7 tooth rim and 115 link for 8 tooth rim.

Thank you.  I will make a 'jog' over to the Madsen website and do some 'looking' around.

When you go to there site you have to download there catalog, to see some of what is available to you. On your 056 it may be hard to find a rim sprocket set up. Check oregons webpage to see what they have for your 056.

Those piltz are made originally by Danzco as racesaw sprockets, the design works ok for racing but the hardened round pin driver will chew up drive links if used for long. Adam

I trim the heel of the bar so I don't add links to the chain. It will match up to the sprocket better anyway.

Yeah almost an extra 50% mark up on those. I've had a few for using racing.
