Sabre chain today
« on: August 07, 2011, 08:32:44 pm »
Had a guy call me twice today. Now remember this is Sunday.

Says a neighbor lost a 5' oak in his rural yard and he can have all he can get off it.  So he ask if I could do some chains for him.

He shows up with about 11 Sabre 880  ???  safety chains and one bastard chain he called it Oregon 72.   All 3/8 050 60dl and needed sharpened in next few days.  Weirdest looking chain with 2 extra raker like things in a row in front of the cutter.

All of this goes on a stihl 031 that he bought new he said when they first came out. Any idea when that was? Still ran pretty good in the test cuts,

Anyhow I made him up a new oregon 72 and a new stihl rsc off one of my saws and sharpened the 72 oregon he brought and sent him on his way happy till I could do the 11 sabre  chains.   I told him 5 a chain to sharpen and what the new chain cost me.
All chin had to be put on the grinder to even all the cutters back up and get the angles back.

He had said the 031 he had was 40 years old. Going by Acres site 1971 was the first year.

I've only seen one 031 and that was in the bone pile at the only one of three Stihl dealers locally I deal with .

If I recall correctly the cylinder is set at a slant rather than horizontal or vertical .I also think it uses a points ignition .

I'm sure I could have bought the thing rather cheaply but as it is I already have a bunch of old saws and was actually looking for a 3 cuber at the time .

Say on that goofy chain it probabley was that old style stuff with a big long anti kick back guard which cuts lousy .I'll find one today and if I can get a picture on will .

I tried once grinding those things off but that's not the thing to do because they act in a way like the rakers although the chain has rakers .It will about jerk your arm off if they get ground down .Bad plan!

I'll go pull a chain out and get a pic of this chain too.

I had a 031 I took in on trade once. Ran 30 mins at a time. Let cool down a run it again till hot. Couldnt find oem parts to fix and should have tried a aftermarket atom in it. It's gone already so I never tried the atom module.
Guy who has it now uses it as is to cut his primary saw out when stuck.  Must be funny knowing your on a time limit.

I just looked at the IPL .It shows both a set of points plus a trigger, same coil number .So it evidently came with one or the other, certainly not both .

On that though, the black beauty  ,my 125 Mac had an atom arc plus a 3 degree advance off set kart engine flywheel key .That miserable atom arc caused me all kinds of fits so I tossed it .Seems all they did was unhook the points, they were still there .Never a problem since . ;D

The sabre 880 chain.  Showing raker on cutter, middle safety raker and tie strap raker like matching cutter raker.
