I tried the Granberg file guide like that.  I liked free handing with just a guide attached to  file better.

Did you use a guide with file or just a file?

It takes a while to get the hang of free handing .Some catch on fast and some never do .It's all in how to get the "working corner " as to how good they cut .

FWIW I know people who have been in the tree business for years that can't file worth a hoot and send out chains two dozen at a time to the shop to get ground .They just figure it's the cost of doing business I guess .

I cant file for crap. and   I'm not one to say chit, but it seems the guides work for hand filers.

I had guys just using file and their chains were dull as chit right after touch ups.  I gave them a guide to try and they couldnt believe the difference in their hand filing.

LOL that's the way some people is around here. i get 15 to 20 chains in from people to grind them back in shape and they are as dull as dull gets when they bring them to me. and i charge them 5.00 bucks a piece to sharpen them.

and they seem to like the way i sharpen them because they bring them back everytime
