Silvey makes several round chain grinders. Here is the typical smaller one. There is one of these a guy has not far from my house. The grinding wheel on the 300 is 5-3/4" X .155" X 1" for 3/8" & .404" chain. Some people call this a 3/16" wheel but 3/16" is .1875. For the little chains, you would use the 5-3/4 X 1/8" X 1" wheels. These wheels are black and 120 grit. I've seen other wheels run on them though.  It works by the grinder swinging down against the chain like with most round grinders. This grinder dresses the wheel with a straight angle on both sides which is unusual? I don't know what it was used for as the vertical angle is wrong. I suspect someone was trying to square grind with it?  Also, the wheel is worn out. The 300 doesn't normally come with a mounted dresser. You use the hand held brick to shape the grinding wheel. You can buy a mounted dresser that just does the final finish dressing of the cutter side of the wheel if you like. Silvey makes some other larger models such as the 510 and 600 for round chain also. This stand is home made.





This picture shows the limits for the vice angle. The stud sticking out from the vice pivot base contacts the stops in each direction. Currently the vice is in an intermediate position not for left or right cutters. Notice the adjusting screw and jam nut that stops the grinder's travel in the down position. At the far left center, notice the degree marks on the grinder tilt for the vertical angle. The 10 degree angle across the front of the top plate is permanent on this grinder.


This last picture shows the substantial chain stop. Notice that the stop is notched on the end that holds the top back corner of the cutter to hold the cutter firmly against the vice. Take notice of the degree marks on the vice pivot angle.

I think Silvey or someone was trying to make a square grinding rig like the add on to the Stihl USG grinder. It's pretty interesting and it looks like the second angle is set incorrectly. It should true the OD of the stone to 5-10 deg instead of the back of the stone.

Like Philbert said, I made a new arbor to use 7/8 grinder wheels but stones for the 300's are still available through Madsens.

As I understand it, same idea, different direction.  The Silvey grinders use larger, 1 inch ID wheels, and need a reducing arbor to use the smaller, more commonly available, 7/8 inch ID wheels.  This replaces the OEM arbor, held on with a set screw on the Silvey 300 grinder.

Other grinders use smaller ID wheels, and need a bushing to use larger ID grinding wheels.
