Square Chain Tolerance
« on: April 01, 2013, 02:51:17 pm »
I was doing a little square grinding today on my old style Silvey Swing Arm (Like the Simington 450) and was trying to stay consistent with tooth length. It was Oregon 3/8ths LGX chisel chain to begin with.

About the best I could do with tooth length even on the same side was .2mm which I thought was all over the place and horrible? I was being very careful about how much pressure I was exerting on holding the chain against the stop etc. That's about .008"  (Plus & Minus .004" ?) and a little hard to eyeball when you're comparing two pieces with converging angles. The chain looks good anyway.

Out of frustration I got out a new 60DL loop of Oregon CL square chain and measured the tooth lengths and they were within .55mm of each other. That's about .022". And that chain looks good too.

I didn't think that was a good tolerance that I was doing but it is better than what Oregon was doing? I made a couple cuts with it , , , Seemed OK to me.

I feel better now.

In spite of all the theory you read . . .  There is a tolerance to everything, dimension wise. Nothing is perfect!

There is a big difference in cutter length with oregon. I'll grind one side and when I switch to the other I grind one tooth and then pull the loop up and compare to the other side. much easier than measuring with calipers.

I just did an old 72DL RSC that was well used and I didn't measure it with the calipers.

I just did a eyeball job on it.

I guess earlier I just wanted to know where it was at?

Saturday I did an old 57DL chain to square and I didn't use calipers on it. I just compared like you said.

I never have checked a whole chain with calipers. I just eyeball mostly putting them side by side like that.

Stihl chain is usually within 0.015" on cutter length.

With my Silvey RSII and the custom slide I made for it I'm able to keep within 0.005" pretty easily, but I usually have to fudge 1-2 cutters per chain to get them sharp.
