To add to my last post, my theory always was a file makes a perfectly flat chisel surface into the chains cutter bit.
Where as a round grinder disc...............
Only down fall of todays chisel bit files is finding ones with perfectly straight corners without being wavy. I know it was a problem back in the early 1980s.  I have not looked at the latest made files though.
I still have a unopened dozen of Windsor triangle files from the 1970s, as much as I square file they'll last me a lifetime :D

I think "Save Edge" are single cut to try to get away from the wave?

Thanks I'll check them out, just haven't had a lot of use for these files for a while now.
But I do hope to enter a few competitions or GTG 's in my upcoming travels.

I was looking closely at the detail pictures of the double bevel file and the 6 sided file from Save Edge in the link posted above, and they both have the wavy characteristic on the corner that you mentioned.

Yeah from looking at the pics it appears they have it too.
My family and I are away from home at the moment and will be back home tomorrow  evening. I'll try and take some good photos of my Windsor files and post them here.

Jim I have a little bit of everything in square files left if you want a close up look.  Stihl  save edge, and 3-4 others.

I seen ATOP mentioned. My atop came with 3 sets of different size roller guides. Sent from Goran the guy that  come up with it.

Also you can use electrical tape on rollers to change things if you wish.

This atop chain was I ,  There was race chain builders and square grinder users in this build off.  3 cuts 10x10 yellow poplar

The first chain we ran was a totally stock 60 driver oregon chain bought at the local co-op. the average time for 3 cuts was 2.89.

Here is the rest of the build off chains
Chain A 2.47  2.28 2.40 average 2.38
Chain B 2.50  2.57  2.31             2.48
Chain C 2.94   2.65  2.56             2.71
Chain D 2.53   2.54  2.35            2.47
Chain E  3.03   2.50  2.65            2.72
Chain F   2.72   2.66  2.91            2.76
Chain G   2.71   2.63  2.40            2.58
Chain  H  2.75   3.06  2.81             2.87
Chain I    2.66   2.59  2.47            2.57

Not the fastest as you can see but it works good enough for me.

I then lent the atop out to be run on a 3120 stock saw race twice for 2 different shows and it won twice.

Is there any way to contact Goran on here to get the same kind of kit that you have. It also seems to me that the Gullet is very important in making a good square chain.

You have to do the Gullets with a 5/32" round file.
