Stocking Chainsaw Chain In your Shop
« on: December 13, 2012, 08:52:09 am »
When you started selling chainsaw chain in your shop did you start out making it off the roll or pre looped? Do you still sell it off the roll or did you switch to pre looped now? If someone was going to start selling whats the best route to go to start out til they get sales history built on chainsaw, making it of the roll or pre looped?

I'd start out with some small rolls (25') until people learned that I sold it.
We should share what we know... someone may learn...
That knowledge can live after us... and that "Pays It Forward".

What I did is order chain that I used for myself in 3/8  325 and 3/8lp in 25'-100'. Then if someone needs off those I make up the chain. If not I order loops for them since I have their chain in hand to know what they need.

It's amazing how many run chainsaws that have no clue about their chain when you ask what chain you running.  I just get that deer in the headlight look all the time.
Then I ask is it 3/8 325 3/8lp is it 043 050 058 063 is it semi chisel  or chisel, full comp, full skip, semi skip etc.

I know what you mean. For some reason they think all parts are interchangeable by brand name. Most of saws have 3/8 and 3/8 LP .50 gauge. I also a have saw that uses the 1/4in .50 gauge.

OFF TOPIC:

I ran into that few onths ago when guy called about a used gas tank for MTD log splitter. I told him to bring the old one so I could match it up. I havent heard or seen the guy since he called.

Some time ago I had guy asking about new piston for a Briggs engine. We told him we needed model type code of the engine. He goes "Arent they all the same? Its 3.5hp vertical shaft".  We had to explain that there not all the same even though its 3.5hp Briggs engine.

I suggest stocking  five 25' rolls until you learn what is popular in the area. 3/8 and .325 in 050 and 058 plus 3/8 lo pro will cover most bases.  Packaged loops are great for the busy shop but you need to check prices from your supplier. Used to be that boxed loops were too expensive but with the labor involved in bucking and splicing they make a lot of sense. You will still need rolls for the odd sizes.

Semi chisel (low kickback safety chain) or full chisel(aggressive chain with kickback)?

i started out with 100' reels. and i make the loops up as they are sold, good thing too-as the customer jumps around with guide bar lengths & guages  :o  buying pre packaged loops might lead to you getting stuck with something you have a hard time selling. as kevin say's about "that deer in the headlight look"....that is a daily thing for me  ;)

you might give some thought to spinning your loops together with an electric drill.once you learn how to do it "CORRECTLY",you will know when the customer comes in with a "faulty" chain that does not work for him, weather he bought it from you or somewhere else!!!

plan on a "learning curve" punching rivets & spinning them back together " CORRECTLY"    ;D

RESIZED PIC down to 7x10 to fit site.

I put chainsaw together using the Stihl chain breaker and riveter. Just been almost 6 years since making a chainsaw chain off a roll of chain.

We sell loops, and keep 1 or two reels on hand for the odd chain. Our market is 15" thru 18"bars. We stock 300 loops to fit most saws. Premade costs us less, plus saves shop time.

I don't really have a " shop " in the true sense of a being a business .Don't advertise or stock parts except old junk in boxes I've saved and can't remember half the time where I've put it .

Most times unless it's a saw for one of the tree trimmers it's more or less people who have no idea how to sharpen a chain or tune a saw .Simple stuff .If they need a new loop I just order it trough Amicks or Baileys .

In my case it's simpley the extension of an interest or hobby which I'm better than the average .I have no intention  of dealing with the average man off the street .I can rebuid a pro saw for a fraction of what the dealer will charge and still make real good money for time spent .The owners are happy ,I'm happy but nobody rushes me and I tell them that before hand .
