IF (and it's a big 'if' - get it?) he will be looking at other OPE, he might want to consider some of the 36-40V hedge trimmers.  For example, I am seeing the Oregon HT250 listed for $180 bare tool, or $380 with mid range battery and charger.  But, if he was also interested in a string trimmer, saw, blower, etc., he could share the batteries and charger.

Most of the cordless companies have a family of OPE, and the batteries are one the most expensive parts.  I don't know how old or active your Dad is, but they are sure a lot more convenient, especially for occasional use.
