You can get by without a key. locate the flywheel with the keyways aligned and tighten it down.

The taper is supposed to hold the flywheel. The key is only for proper alignment at installation of the flywheel.

Many of the racing chainsaws where they have swapped coils have the flywheel located in a different position where the keyways do not align.
We should share what we know... someone may learn...
