I bet that big cc john deere = homelite straight shaft trimmer  I stole the motor for a mini tiller would have been a good metal blade brush cutter. It was real torque  monster trimmer and not all crazy on the rpm side.

Turned opposite direction though. Do all gear head types do that?

Between a curved shaft and a straight shaft trimmer, the engines and the main shafts both turn the same direction.

But with the straight shaft trimmer, there are two meshed bevel gears in the angle head. These have a gear reduction as well as a direction change.

You will notice that most curved trimmers use .080" line and the straight shaft ones use .090" line. This is because of the gear reduction in the head.

If you have the broken trimmer, slide the tube out of the power head and lets see what you got in the way of a broken shaft?

It is likely broken at the very end where it goes into the clutch bell? The shaft will just slide out of the tube. It should be square on each end but yours will be broken.

Lets see if it is wound wire or solid?

This ought to be fun to figure out how to get back together someday. All of the trigger springs, throttle etc was disassembled and in a box on pick up.

SOLID shaft is what is broke at a small area going into the clutch drum. I had to remove all of the housing to remove clutch drum and bearing so I could get the short part and screw it out of the drum.

His replacement was a 326LS not a 326L like he sent in email to me.

I'm either going to get a used or new shaft.  But I bet the broken part could be welded back (if you could keep it some what true)?   Looks chromed or something too.

I'd venture to say that the broken shaft was not made properly. That it should have been normalized after the welding process to relax and realign the carbon formations that were upset by the welding process.
