Roper/Craftsman 917 353776 , does anyone know anything about this saw? It came in from an old guy who said I cannot get it to run.

t has good spark but is extremely hard to pull over. If you remove the plug it turns free using the starter put the plug back in and hard to turn over. I am thinking that, the key may be sheared off the flywheel and when under compression the wheel is spinning on the shaft. Afraid to tear into it too much because I can't find parts for it.

Near as I can tell, yes Roper 3.7. I found one on eBay that is it, look here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Craftsman-3-7-By-Roper-Chainsaw-20-Windsor-Very-nice-/250827370544?pt=US_Chainsaws&hash=item3a6679f030

Can't figure out what is going on with it. Here is the type of flywheel it has on it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/craftsman-roper-chainsaw-3-7-18-flyweel-/251373705562?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a870a595a

It appears from the pictures of the back of the flywheel that the saw does use a seperate woodruff key. I have taken the nut off the flywheel but there appears to be a large washer covering the center of the flywheel that I cannot get off. Doesn't appear to be a way to get the flywheel off without getting this off.

I will look over the IPL to see if it sheds any light on this.

OK, the IPL reveals that there is a woodruff key, and it is still available. It also appears that the only way to pull the flywheel is to remove the starting pawls and use some sort of yoke/beam type of puller. The design of the saw is such that you cannot put any pressure beneath the flywheel, and use the hammer method.

If it has been spinning because of a sheared key, it probably will be hard to remove without damage. However it is probably already damaged from spinning on the shaft. Saw may not be worth messing with.

See those Ropers all the time on Ebay I wouldn't worry about parts being available.  Roanoker had a bunch of them @ one time.  He got cancer and was selling off a bunch of saws and parts.

I hate hearing that.  I was wondering why all of sudden the sale off back then.

Hope he is doing better.  Prayers.
