small saw ?
« on: August 20, 2012, 11:59:59 am »
i'm looking for the smallest petrol saw i can get, for chopping branch wood (about 50 to 100mm)  into stove fuel, i want to zip thought it quick. any suggestions ?

Is 12 inch the smallest bar i can get ?

while it's nice to have a beutifull split log woodpile, and i have,  iv'e found zipping up branch wood gets you more fuel for much less effort, and you don't need to split it, or hump big rounds out of the woods, so i'm not fussy about small wood, the more the better.

I had 10" on trim saws. I have seen a 8" from the pole saws that would fit the same trim saw mount  A041.

Specifially to the question there's got to be at least 50 various small saws either marketed now or at one time .

The saw in the picture was given to me being some variation of Poulan sold by Sears and Roebuck .46 cc and I have no idea of the actual Poulan number .It had that little dinky 8 inch bar on it when I got which I found to be a nuisance and replaced it with a 14" .The 8 incher didn't cut any faster than the 14".

Now as to cutting brush for firewood I guess that's just a preference but you have to cut a lot of it to equate to standard 12 to 18" rounds which are split .You get little dinky 2 inch stuff you're feeding the fire every half an hour .Like I said though it's not my call . ;)

If buying used 200 watch for carb issues and seals on those.  Great saws when they are running tip top.

Al has dug into many so maybe he will share more on them if buying used.

For my smallest chainsaw, I have a Mac

Though it is not in the caliber of the Stihl 200T

It is a Mac FR32 and more or less the same saw has other names like 3200/3214. Mine is from 1998 and has never given any trouble.

14" sprocket nose bar and 3/8 Low Profile Safety chain.  Two bar studs.

The grand kids have been using it around the yard for the last 10 years. It has the third bar on it from where they have bent the bar.

I took the baffles out of the muffler and opened up the outlet. The little Mac really came alive after that. Never any trouble.

Is a plastic body clamshell home owner design. cost $94.95 at Odd Lots.

I also have a like new Mini Mac 10 that someone gave me and it is not worth the powder it would take to blow it up. You start using it hard and it will quit.

We should share what we know... someone may learn...

Be all that you can be . . .

Well unless you have the luck of the Irish like I do you won't land either an 020T or 200 on the cheap .

Little saws for that intended purpose it's hard to beat a Poulan for the price .In spite of what the unlearned and ignorant of the facts  might say most  with few exceptions they are pretty good light weights in the 3 cube and slightly under displacements .They aren't oak slayers but real good limbers .

Some more clarification on this .In the picture , center is a Poulan 1.9 cu inch .The same as Kevin posted in Poulan green .They aren't a bad saw in spite of how old they are .Cheap most of the time and damned near bullit proof .Only draw back is some like my red Craftsman has a fixed jet carb .Some did not .

That little rascal was my clmbing saw before I got the pair of Stihl 200t's .On that some might say at my age I shouldn't climb any more but then again I never really gave a hoot what people think  ;)

I just bought a used Sthil MS200T 14 " off Fleabay, that needs repair,  for a quarter of the new price, that is about as good a deal as i can get. It's listed as a rough idler, and a busted chain brake plastic part.

Thanks for your help everyone.
