Wards Clinton ?
« on: January 03, 2015, 08:40:59 pm »
I remember back when I was a teenager in the late 60's, somebody gave a big old monster chainsaw, if I remember right it was a Monkey Wards ,but I'm pretty sure it was a Clinton 2-stroke, had about an 18" bar on it, damn thing must have weighed a half ton. I got it running but never really did anything with it.The really weird thing about it was, it had a regular float type carb on it, so all you could do was cut stuff that was already down on the ground.Anyone else ever see one like that? I kind of wish I had kept it, might be worth something today!

I remember them in the late 50's - very early 60's.  Everything was bushings. No needle, ball, or roller bearings. Not much power even compared with today's Chinese saw.

I have a Sears push Lawn mower that My dad bought new in 1958 for $24.95. It had a Clinton 4 stroke engine. That would be $204 in today's dollars. It is on its 3rd B&S engine now. That Clinton didn't make past 1960. The deck was magnesium is the reason it is still around.

I do remember those Clinton motors were pretty common back then, I was going to use that chainsaw motor on a gokart, but never did do it.I had an old 2-wheel garden tractor with a Clinton 4 stroke engine on it.I was plowing my driveway one nite in a bad snowstorm with it, until it shot the rod out thru the block, ran nice until then! :'(

1960 we got a GoKart 800 with a Clinton on it. The cart itself was a very competitive design for 1960 but the Clinton horizontal shaft was a minimal engine.

As we had no other use for the engine, we ported it and stuffed the crankcase. The Clinton really came alive and the 2nd round on the track, the rod came out the side.

That was the end of the Clinton and on to MC20 time. Seems like the Mac was re-geared 80:1?

When I was young, my Dad raced gokarts, I remember they had a "bushing" class for those old bushing motors like those Clintons. He used Power Products engines, I guess they were better....I think the McCullochs  were hot then.Ah,the good old days!
