A point to consider, if you'll pardon the pun. I'm rusty on my points and condenser theory, but the points should open at the time of minimum current flow across them to prevent arcing and burning. Running with the wrong point gap isn't good for the points. The condenser controls the current flow across the points and a bad condenser will eat points.

I believe the condenser will discharge the voltage to ground instead of arching across the contacts of the points.   
That is the nature of capacitance.
