Dolmar 9000 with a melted slug.
« on: October 24, 2014, 06:44:37 am »
Im repairing a PS9000 that was a pig-n-poke at a local auction. Looks like it was run lean or had a serious air leak.

Im a 4 stroke guy, so Im not sure what Im doing, Ive replaced the boot (intake), although the original was not ripped or ****. What else do I need to check ? I did buy a new Tilliston to replace the Bing that was in there, I hope that is a bolt in replacement.

The crankcase looks really dry to me, not sure if it should be dry after sitting or should still be damp ? I see aluminum in the crankcase, in powder form, with what little oil is stuck to the case.

How do I crack the crankcase open to clean or do I leave it alone ? Was also wondering how do you know when it needs a crank and a rod ? The rod seems pretty loose, but then again, Im a 4 stroke guy and Im used to playing with sleeve bearings, not rollers.

One other question, being that parts appear to be scarce for this thing (I think its a 1994 model year), is the PS9010 the same saw, save for the flywheel, coil and carb ?

Id really like to put this saw back in service, and not make parts out of it !

I tried to post pics, am I to assume that I need to host my own pics when posting on this forum ?

If you saw a similar post, I put one over at the Forestry Forum, either they are not into dolmars, or because I dont post daily I didnt get any responses, so I thought I would give this a try.

Any input is appreciated, keeping in mind, I dont know what Im doing, thanks in advance, Bill

Little slop (up-Down) is allowed in the rod big end. The main crank bearings should be smooth with no noticeable play in any direction.

If there are aluminum pieces in the crankcase they must be removed.

Splitting the crankcase will likely be necessary to Replace the crank bearings. This generally requires a special tool?

The rod bottom end bearing is not considered replaceable. If there is up-down play - another crank assembly is required.

It is highly probable that the seals on the crank, both flywheel and clutch side are bad.

There is 2 really good dolmar dealers here.  Hopefully 1 or both chime in to help you too.

BTW, thanks for the replies,... :)

Thats not good, doing the math on this, $ wise, Im ahead buying a new pro saw, than repair this one, even though Ive already bought parts for it. It was pulling a 36" chain, and at 90cc, is the reason I took the pig-n-poke. From what Ive read, I will be at $800 before Im done, that is if I can successfully clean up the jug and find all the nick nack parts l need like crank seals and gaskets.

A good running used Stihl 660 or Husqvarna 395 may be cheaper in the long run? The 36" bar will likely work on the 395?

Sometimes, pride of accomplishment comes into play? You may want to evaluate your 9000 carefully to base your decision.

Some people just part out burned up saws?

Can I post pictures of this saw using image hosting ? Is that allowed on this forum ?

Yes, I love to tinker and fix things, so Id like to get it running, but at the same time, Ive got firewood and trees to cut, so I do need a working saw. Id dont really need a 90cc saw, call it a luxury, but Id like to put a 28" bar on it, if I get it running

Yes you can present remotely hosted pictures here. I use Photo Bucket. It's very easy this way.

The usual scenario for not being able to post pictures directly here from your computer is original picture size. If my picture is too large I just put it in Photobucket and all the problems are solved..

You can reduce the size of the picture and post directly. I don't remember the exact maximum size?

A thought comes to mind?

The icon to post pictures is not present in the Quick Reply editor.

If you use the reply Icon under the last post, the editor that comes up includes the picture browse icon along the bottom just under the editor area.

If you use the "Modify" icon to edit your existing post, the resulting editor includes the Browse icon along the bottom.
