Dolmar7900 with 28" bar
« on: April 05, 2013, 08:35:54 pm »
I bought a Husqvarna 65 Special last summer and it came with a 28" Husky large mount Oregon bar and LGX chain. I never mounted it on the 65 Special.

Also this 65 Special and 28" bar had been setting around for a few years so there was some light rust on the bar & chain. The 65 Special runs great BTW.

I took a scythe sharping stone and worked the burrs from the rails of the bar and enlarged the tiny Oregon oiling holes with a drill  and removed the rust with a brown 3M pad.

Then, I put the B&C on one of my Dolmar 7900's that had been running a 24" bar. I spent a while with a file on the chain and though rather unused, it had been rocked some. I didn't completely clean up the top plate of every tooth but it looked like it would cut well. I'll go over it again when I get done playing around.

So today, I decided to run the Dolmar 7900 with the 28" bar and get the chain limbered up and new oil worked through everything. The Dolmar had not been run in a year so I put some oil in the tank and gassed her up. The chainsaw started up rather normally considering how long it had been setting around.

Sure enough, the chain loosened up some as it smoothed the rust out. After tightening the chain again, I ran it some more.

I didn't have any 28" wood handy but ran the chain in some smaller stuff. Oh my, that seems like such a bigger chainsaw with the 28" bar on it.

A 7900 is a littler heavier than a Husqvarna 372 anyway and with that extra 4" of bar hanging out there sure made it seem bigger.

I think the combination will be fine when I need 28" bar.

My 7900 normally runs a 24" bar and the balance is good.
My neighbor across the road had a big white pine down after Sandy. A chance to get onto some big wood, I volunteered to slice an dice.
Installed the 32" bar with a skip chain and had a ball, saw dust and chips everywhere, even noodled the big ones, to cut down on the weight.

The mix was a little fat and four cycled but cleaned up in the cut. my worry was the bar oil, but it fed enough to keep the chain wet.

I think the Dolmar 7900 is an under rated saw. over shadowed by the S and H brands.
I also have a Makita 6400 and a OEM 79cc P&C in case I run into a HD rental or I need a new jug.

What was the question ???

:D My memory is like that too, very good but a little short. Sounds like you have that 7900 perfectly dialed in.

I ran a 32" full comp on a woods ported 7901. No problems oiling in ripping cuts with windsor speed tip bars.

32" is as long as I would want on them woods ported 79cc in hardwoods. Also ran 32" on the 74.66cc 372 woods ported.

Used my new 7900 today for three tanks of gas.

Actually I've had it at least three years. I forget now. I have another early 7900 that I have been using.

This new one has not been run in a couple years and Cut4fun used it then.

I went to sharpen the chain before using the saw. The 84DL Windsor chain that came with the 7900 had never been sharpened. I gave the left hand cutters four strokes and then went to do the right hand cutters. The 7/32 file would not fit into the gullets. So I relieved the back side of each right hand raker a little so I could get the file in there. The angle didn't look like the other cutters so I gave the teeth about 10 strokes and they cleaned up.

The 7900 wouldn't start. After trying to figure out what was wrong, I saw that the backwards switch was turned off. So I pried it out, turned the wires around and reinserted the switch Husqvarna style. Of course now it was flooded. I got it going and it was a little rich and the idle was a little low. Magic screw driver time.

The work I was going to do was noodling big silver maple crotches. The chain vibrated to beat the devil in the cut so I gave it a few more strokes with the file and it smoothed out. I ran three tanks of gas through the 7900 and the chain stayed sharp the whole time. The oiler was turned all the way up but the oil tank would stihl be half full when the gas ran out.

The 7900 ran perfect and hot restarts were done drop style.

I touched up the chain and put it all away.

The more I used the 7900 the better I liked it. I got the biggest crotches all done.

I'm going to get out a 372 that Cut4fun wanted me to bring over to his house for comparison with another chainsaw. I'll put a 20" bar and RSC chain on it like he wanted and use the 372 to do some more of the crotches another day to get it limbered up.

I don't remember if I wrote about this before or not?

A few years ago, I was interested it getting a 7900. I was going to get a used rental Makita from Home Depot and make a Dolkita 7900 out of it.

Home Depot would not cooperate. So the local Dolmar dealer offered me a new 6421 for the same price that Bailey's was selling the Makita 6421 for.

But I wanted a 7900!!! He wanted $900 something for stock 7900 .

So I went home and did a little figuring. So I got the 6421 with a 24" power point style bar.  The dealer never ran the 6421 and neither did I.

I eventually bought the 7900 piston and cylinder, the heavy duty filter kit, non cat muffler, and shorter top muffler bolt and bushing. Then I had my 7900 with a HD filter for about $900.

When converting the chainsaw, it had been run at the factory by Dolmar. The conversion was straight forward and the 7900 started right up as if nothing had been changed.

A couple weeks later, I came across a (locally) used 7900 with 24" bar for $350 so for 7900 duty I've used the old one.

Jim you interested in testing your 79cc new and used dolmar 7900 with that square chain and log we tested the 71cc saws in?  What made me think of this, me and 2 other guys were running my green jeans 505 82cc  (Wed) with round hand filed chain and I was thinking that square chain and 71cc saws seemed faster in the cuts (also the green 505 is on 1st tank with new rings etc too). Might of just been my seat of the pants wrong feeling again.

But anyhow I was thinking your new not broken in 7900 with HD and used 7900, my older yellow broken in 505 and green 505 with the 80cc echo 8000 JD800 tested too.

Just thinking out loud and wont be back for a bit. On a shooting, fishing vacation at the moment.
