Makita 540 ?
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:48:31 am »
I honestly don't know beans from apple butter about either Makita or Dolmar .

Now the problem at hand is my neighbors Makita 540 which I assume is a Dolmar 540 with blue paint .Actually with an orange crankcase he got from Scott about a year or two ago .

Well the danged thing spit part of a rod bearing which got sucked up into the cylinder and punched a groove on the side of the piston .The cylinder is okay but the piston is junk .Now the 64 dollar question what fits the thing ?I have no idea myself .

He has a good crankshaft from the original crankcase so that's not a problem but my Lord an oem piston is over 100 bucks for that little thing .

He's going to get hold of Scott and I told him I'd do a little searching myself .So far I can't find anything .

The 540 has a 45 mm bore but is made along the lines of the old 109/110/111/115 series and is not really related to the 460/510/5100/5105 series.

The 540 was the largest of the old original Sachs Dolmar design. I think they were made up into 2005?

Al get measurements and bet we can match up a piston.    See how wide old skirts are too just in case.

 Did you say 45mm 660mag?

So now we need top of pin hole to top of piston.

total length in mm.

pin size in mm.

Thank you much .I had already found that IPL but didn't know if it was 44 mm or 45 mm .Evidently then it's 45 which should be Dolmer PN # 033-132-010 .

The pin size must be 10 MM because he lost one of the circlips and I used one from a junk piston of an 034 Stihl to get it going .

I'll see him definately this week end and see how he made out .

It' a nice little saw for no bigger than it is .He asked about how much to sink in repairs and as my opinion I said no more than a 100 .You could take that 100 and another 100-150 and land a pretty fair running Stihl of a larger displacement if you looked around .Then again I'm a tight wad and maybe somebody else might think it merits a little more for repairs .

Well unfortunatley we in this area are not blessed with much choice on higher quality saws .
The closest Husky dealer is 40 miles away and he doesn't have the sense to blow his own nose .Dolmar is non existant .J-Red I've seen maybe 3 in my lifetime .

So having said that it's probabley the reason I know so little about those brands .McCulloch and Stihl ,what was at one time and what is now .

There are 7 Stihl dealers within 22 miles of my house but only one of them stocks any parts.

There is at least that many in these parts and every one of them has parts .One is about 2 miles from my house and he annoys me so I drive about 14 miles to one who doesn't .

If my Stihl dealer doesn't have the parts it usually only takes about two days from the supplier in Cincy .

What few Husqvarna parts I need either come from a dealer down south or I find them on flea bay .So far I haven't had any problems .

On  rare occurances I need a McCulloch part but really those saws are more or less in the "collectable " catigory .So far even being obsolete I've been able to find them .

It has been a LONG time since Stihl made a saw that was remotely as well built as the 540.
I personally would put a BUNCH more into a 540 Makita than a similar Stihl,.............except for resale.
But then, I don't know how to sell a saw apparently!!! ???
