Well on cost I think he can do it for the price of a piston  if he can find one that fits .I'm not sure about say a Husqvarna 45mm piston .

Due to the fact the engine design is an open transfer about any thing with the right pin to crown and skirt length that's close should work unless it's a head knocker .

al, tell the guy he's buying the oem piston and do it that way. too much over thinking going on. these saws are well worth the $100 beans to get it back up and running. how much time do you want to spend on it? any other piston's going to be at least around half that $100 then you need to work it over to make it work properly, and nowhere near the quality of the oem. do a proper muffler mod and that little saw will work very well and he'll be as happy as a clam. :)

540 is 44mm according to Dolmar PS540 IPL.  Here is a link I found.

I gotta see what he wants to do .I could half azz it the way it is and probabley make it work okay but it's not my call .

The needle came though right at the transfer ,pinned the ring and it lost compression .Now people might laugh but I've saved sicker cats than this one .I can get the ring out if I work at it ,buff the nick out of the piston and most likely it would be fine .It didn't skin the skirt of the piston on its' way out .

New ring and change the crankshaft of course .As I say though not my call .If it were mine I'd give it a go .

The saw now like I said does okay but quite honestly it doesn't have anything over a 60 cc Stihl from what I've seen but again people have their favorites .--Ford/Chevy --- ;)

Well for me one of the very best things about the Makita over the Stihl is the fact that I can set the choke where I want it and turn the ignition on and off as I please!!!!
I HATE having it all in one operation.
(One more of the reasons I would never trade my 9010 for an MS660 but that's another thread!)

About the only thing I know of that somewhat regularly goes wrong with the Makita 540 is the oil line, where it goes through the bulkhead, will shrink over time and leak like hell. Easy to replace the line, they are cheap and the new lines are a different compound that doesn't shrink anymore.

More on this saga .My neighbor stopped over tonight and we tipped a few cold ones .Seems he landed a clean as a pin Stihl 290 on the cheap which should do him fine .I would'nt  have bought it but I'm not him .

I'll get a hold of the bones of the saw probabley this week end and see what I can do with it .Saving it is not a problem .The big unanswered question with a half azzed fix is how long it runs .Some of those Rube Goldberg fixes I've done are still cutting wood so you never know .

You will enjoy the chainsaw when you get it done.

I got the crankshaft changed ,did an Uncle Al farmer fix on the piston ,and tried to order parts from Northwoods .

I don't know what their story is ,might be like Scott and only available on the phone at certain times .I'll give them a few days to get back and then I'll just find parts someplace else I guess .

Big surprise the bar and chain from a 10 series Mac is a perfect fit up for those who might want to know .So now I wonder if this little saw takes the same bar mount as say the newer Dolmars then it would make sense a Mac bar would work on them also .Imagine that .
