My 7300 went kapoot!
« on: October 26, 2014, 09:29:20 am »
A friend of mine used my 7300 and it just quit. He tried to restart it and its locked up. I havent torn it down yet. Im not sure I have the torx wrench to remove the cylinder. Where is the best place to buy a piston and cylinder ? I will most likely buy a 7900 kit .

I buy from Nate all the time, great guy and super fast shipping. Some of the early 73/7900 saws had a problem with base gaskets. It seems that the fibre ones were very easily sucked into the case along the outer edges of the transfer ports, causing a catastrophic air leak and engine failure. Dolmar compensated for this by switching to a metalized base gasket. You will need a 6 inch Torx T-27 3/8 drive socket to remove the jug and torque the new one. Make sure the new 7900 kit comes with the metalized base gasket and the slab sided piston.

It would be interesting to see if the gasket WAS sucked into the case along the outer edges of the transfer ports or what the real cause of the failure was and how extensive the damage. Also, if you have to change the main bearings, don't forget to glue them in with Loc-Tite 601/603.

Most folks find the 54mm BB kits on the 7900 to be under-whelming, seems that the 7900 case volume is not sufficient to support the larger bore. +1 on 7900 OEM kit.

'Belt & Suspenders' I have taken to applying a thin coat of 1194 to both sides of the metalized gasket during assembly, just to be sure. The tab on the gasket goes toward the EP.

Im hoping I dont have to change the main bearings. Ive never split a case and would probably make a mess of it

I hope so too, not that you would mess it up but it is a bunch of work. If you can post some pics of the disassembly. You can get the T-27 Torx bit from off e-Bay for $5 shipped. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gearwrench-82515-T-27-Long-Torx-Socket-1-4-Drive-/400483912443?hash=item5d3eb38afb&item=400483912443&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr

IIRC every fastener in that saw is a T-27. Make sure that you check the carb boot for cracks/tears, if you have to change the top end, put a new boot on, cheap insurance!
