My new to me Makita 6421
« on: March 21, 2014, 07:31:34 pm »
Just picked this up from Homie Depot $200.00 . It only has 6 hours or less on it . What kind of chain comes on there rental saws because they are JUNK ? It came with a new chain and I didn't cut much wood at all and it stretched and it's dull already. Cut great for the first 10 cuts or so then it went to **** fast.

I think it is Tri Link chain from China?

Wow 200 bucks what a great deal.    How was the compression on it and did the saw show any abuse, being that it was a rental.

I didn't check the compression. But I took the muffler off and took a look at the piston and cylinder. Both  looked like new. Runs great the chain is junk though .

Checking the piston and cylinder is the next best thing.    Sounds like you got a heck of a deal.   There is a home depot here but I do not know if they sell rented saws.

Good deal on a nice saw.

HD turns over their rental equipment every 3 years or so.  Some is next-to-new.  Some is abused.  I bought a couple of used, electric Makita chainsaws from them.  Even if they don't have any marked for sale, sometimes you can approach the Rental Manager and ask if any might be coming up soon - they have some discretion, especially if it is close to replacement time.

HD uses Tri-Link ('000') chain on their rental saws, and sells it in their Power Care retail boxes (I really like the plastic boxes!).

I went in the rental dept and it was on the table for $300. . I asked the guy how many hours were on it because it looked almost new. He went and checked and said less then 6 hours,
so just for the hell of it. I asked him if he would take $200 and he said it was mine. The chain was new but after a few cuts maybe 20 at the most the chain was streched to **** and dull.

What a deal. I'm always a bit late when HD around here sells rentals. That saw looks great.  Chris
