New Dolmar Member saying hello
« on: May 13, 2012, 09:51:55 pm »
Well, I am a new member here and am a HUGE dolmar fan.

I am no expert when it comes to saws, I know just enough to be dangerous.

He seem particularly interested in the "i" series carbs and wanted me to share a bit on them. I think w8ye has pretty well summed it up in a few posts of his I have read. The i series saws, including the 110i, 111i, 115i, 116si, and 120si have a unique carb. There is NO choke butterfly. They use a jet/port that when 'choked' squirts fuel directly into the venturi. Makes them pretty easy to start cold. Other than that there isnt much difference between it and a typical carb. But a common mistake I here frequently is people refer to them as a "fuel injection" saw, like moderm autos. But that is NOT the case. It is just a different style of choking the saw when cold starting is all.

My stable of saws currently include a 112, 115i, (2) 116si's, 117, 120si, ps350, ps6400/8400, and a ps7900.

I really like the late 1980's-early 1990's vintage saws. There were a LOT of them that were identical with only a different power rating, and several "families" of saws that were VERY similar. Lots of parts interchange between many of the saws of that era too. What all will interchange, IDK, because dolmar made everythign really confusing.

Anyway, just kinda saying hello. I dont know how often I will be around here, cause I stay pretty busy and with other forums, dont have much time to spend elsewhere online, but if anyone has any specific questions regarding dolmars, I will certainly try to help out.

Welcome...Dolmars don't get the recognition of the big two, but they are right there with, or surpass, them with lots of their models. I own several 7900's, a couple of 8401's, a 34, 401, a 123/143, and a 152 that is mostly complete and waiting on some time and parts.

Thanks for sharing info.

w8ye said he is going to bring a bad i carb from a 111 for me to dig into someday.

Interesting idea and just want to see what makes it tick.

Thanks,
Kevin

Inside, the i carb is just like any other. Functions the same. Only difference is in the way they choke. No butterfly for that.

Welcome to the forum and it certainly is good to have another Dolmar enthusiast here.

I have a few and they are GREAT saws!

I guess one of my all time favorites is my lightly ported Makita DCS-401.

Hey Kevin I had taken some photos of the Tillitson HS236C injection carb from my Makita 6000i

Here are a few photos of the injection valve assembly with needle as well as the hole which the needle covers/uncovers and the orifice which goes to the venturi.  That small orifice is really small and they tend to plug, especially if old gas is left used for some time

Just a word of caution to anyone else attempting to remove the injection valve, go easy/slowly when removing it since it is press fitted to seal and could break.

The fuel comes from this hole

It is controlled by turning this needle.

And Fuel exits into the venturi via this small hole.

Hopefully that is helpful.

Interesting. Thanks for posting pics.

I was working on a mini tiller that didnt have a choke yesterday. It had something similar to these i dolmars. It was a newer craftsman = ??? made in 31cc-32cc

You push the lever  like on the i dolmars and it was on the side in carb, no choke anywhere.

I have a four stroke Saito gasoline engine with a Walbro WYB barrel type carb

For priming it, close the throttle and pull out on the throttle lever while turning the engine over.
