Stripped bar bolt PS540
« on: February 03, 2019, 08:05:35 pm »
I had a moment of abject stupidity.  Just leaned on a bar bolt nut too hard and stripped the threads completely on the casing side of an old favorite saw, my Dolmar PS 540.  Can I get away with an 8mm X 1.25 Helicoil for a repair?

Thanks,
Ray

I ask the chainsaw repair group for you.

Some ideas.

I wouldn't reccomend helicoil for anything unless material is lacking. Stihl studs can sometimes be screwed in. For thread repair I'd use these.  https://www.mcmaster.com/#90699A315

Stainless threaded insert works great on any say. Drill and tap for tge insert and JB Weld the threads before screwing it in. Better then factory

Stihl stud repair I know of. But these I didnt know if they had a bigger repair stud or not. Seen folks drill out case and tap for a redneck bar stud deal. Cant remember it all.

I wonder if the stihl ones I have saved in thread would work for him. Turn or grind shoulders down.

Nate a dolmar makita echo dealer  =  i would skip the helicoil....key sert like shawn suggested or time sert. on holes that were to big for a time sert i have also drilled/tapped to next size up and screwed a bolt in it with red loctite on it. after it set up i cut the bolt off flush and drilled/tapped it for the correct thread.

I can't remember off the top of my head for sure what saw I fixed, I think it was my old Stihl 019.
But I was able to put a longer bar stud in it and back a nut onto it inside the oil tank, right through the oil tank filler hole.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.
