CS 400 Muffler mod.
« on: October 25, 2017, 07:47:05 am »
A search didn't come up with any thing about modding the muffler of a CS400.

Any one have pictures of what they did and be able to explain the steps?

Do you have to cut the muffler open, or can you use a spade bit to drill out the cat honeycomb material and then use a drill or hole saw for the outlet?

You won't be able to cut that cat material with a spade bit for sure as that stuff is very hard.  I used a 1 inch steel cutting hole saw to bore through the inlet and cat.  I ruined the cutter and still had to knock out some of the cat with chisels and hammer.  Oddly, the 400 has a restricting plate in the inlet, whereas my 310 and 352 have the same muffler and cat but no restriction on the inlet side.  All three of them are straight through to the front portion of the muffler now.  Catless!

I suppose a carbide grit hole saw could handle it with no problems?

What diameter hole saw?
I thought about using a hammer and a star drill  to break most of it up, and then use the hole saw.
Dunno.

First one shown is the muffler from my CS-400.  Second muffler is from a CS-310 or CS-352.  Why the 400 has that restrictor plate is beyond me.  A ONE INCH hole saw fits pretty well in the tube for the cat material, and in the case of the 400 it cut the restrictor to line up with the rest of the tube. You should be able to guess what part gets drilled out of the muffler from here on out.  I opened up the front deflector plate a little bit too.

Mainly, my saws run a lot cooler now, and not much louder which is a benefit in my opinion.
