Anyone run one of these new Echos? Are they clamshell design? Still looking for a 0-55cc saw for play.

Have not run the 550 but have run the 450 500 and 600.  All of these models are typical "pro" style build.  The 550 shares the same design as the 600 which has a shindaiwa style cylinder among other parts.  The 500 and 600 I ran were plenty strong and smooth, unfortunately didn't get to spend too much time on either.

Will probably buy a 500 when one comes along for a price.

the 550 is too close to the weight of the 600 to be worth while. it's a very good saw, but the cs500 with a muffler mod will outcut it quite easily.
the cs500 is actualy a very good 50cc saw with little exposure. out of the box tuned properly, my buddy als' 500 was hanging with my mm5105.
not trying to take anything away from the 550, it's just too heavy for the power compared to the 500 :)

Was wondering about first hand experience.  Thanks

Echo states 10.6 lbs on the 500 and after running it, I wouldn't argue with them.  The 550 states 13.3 in comparison to 13 for the 600 so something is off on the site.  The 600 weights what you would expect a 60cc saw to but if the 550 is near the same, it is outclassed.

I agree as well, the 500 is a great saw with amazing filtration.

No, it has transfer caps like the shindaiwa's had.  Similar to Husky.  I see they have updates the 600p in some way though.  Claiming the same eco gains as a strato....

if you got a real good deal on the 550, i'd say go for it. it is a good saw, just a little heavier than the others in it's class.
if you're used to running an older chainsaw, you might even like the feel as it would be closer to some of the older 50ish cc saws, just quicker and smoother. i know the av is very good. it's a smooth saw to run. you have to remember, this saw is being marketed in the same class as the stihl ms290. this saw is so much better than the 290. hands down.
i would put this saw in the same catagory as the dolmar 111. very good firewood saw that weighs a little more but is a smooth runner.
dolmar has used the excuse in the past that the small amount of weight they keep in the saw helps reduce the high frequency vibes through absorbtion.
that being said, the cs500 is just lighter, faster and just as smooth. it would be the one i would take into the woods with me if i need to run a saw for 8-9 hours a day everyday. the 550 would be a great choice if you were running it for 5-6 hours a day every few days for the usual firewood cutting.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.

If I get one it will never see work and weight does not matter. I only plan to lift it for 5 seconds or less.

I have a CS-520 exhomedepot rental saw that I really like.  I know the guys that look after their rentals so I'm OK with the ex rental thing.  Runs and oils great I've yet to do a Muff mod on it but plan to in the future. I also got 6 good chains with it as the replacement unit was a different bar length. Every time a saw is returned it gets a new chain regardless of wear.  Employees can have them for the asking! SHHHH!!

Regards,

lee
