Echo Cs-351vl (JD 40v)
« on: November 01, 2013, 04:56:06 pm »
I picked up the yellow version of the 351 for not much recently.  Started 2nd pull.  The bar has surface rust on it but is in pretty good shape and I had several 14" Oregon lopro 91 chains. All it needs is 3 - O rings for the auto oiler and it's good to go.  This one has a chain brake which is actually like the old brake drums with shoes rather than the more modern band.  The bar will clean up OK should I want to use it.  Not sure how to do pics here, have to do some study.

Hey there Leec, if you don't mind me asking, where are you located (general area, not trying to get too specific) that you keep running across Echo saws?

Hi Captain Howdy,

Not sure where you are but I'm 100 miles north of Toronto.  If 660 Mag is right you are in PA?

No, not PA.   I am about 40 miles west of Cleveland, almost 6 miles south of the shore of Lake Erie.   Basically just south of Vermillion, Ohio.   I like my Echo, didn't know there was such a following on your side of the border.   Glad to here it though.   I think they are a company that should keep their doors open, and keep doing what they do.

I still don't know how I'll like this older JD40V (351) as I'm still waiting for some O rings for the oiler.  I didn't want to run it in wood without good oiling.  It might be a little heavy being all metal but they certainly are very well made.  I'll let you know how well it runs and cuts once the O rings arrive. I'll put either a 14 or 16" bar running lopro (91) chain.  That's what was on it when picked up.

I also have a CS-520 that I've had for a couple of years and really like it with a 20" bar.  My newly obtained cs440 is waiting for a chain brake/clutch cover which was missing when I bought it for $45.00.  It shows very little use.  I've got a Makita 18: bar for it, just need to get a .325 58 guage chain.

The only MM I've done on the 520 and 440 is to pry open the slotted opening in the muffler.  may do some more serious work later.

Good luck with yours

Lee

Those CS520 saws cut good stock but really wake up with a good muff modd. I'd do it sooner rather than later.      Steve

Are there any threads on MM'ing these Echos?  I've done some simple work on Wild Things but the Echo muffs are welded together.  I could drill holes or use my Dremmel cut off wheel I guess to cut slots in the front of the muff so as not to burn the chain brake.

Also got my O rings, for the auto oiler,  so should be able to get a better feel for the JD40V running and cutting.

Thanks,

Lee

I'm a little stunned, it just checked the comp on this little bugger and it pulled 220psi!!  Not sure that can be right.  The last time I used this tester, last week, was on a CS-440 and it pulled about 145psi

I've put a .043 Stihl 12" bar and chain on this little saw and it balances quite nicely. What with all the snow I haven't had a chance to get it into wood yet.
It starts easily and runs great.  Of course being all metal it is heavy for it's size 35.2cc but I bet it will be running when all the 'plastic fantastic' saws have gone south.  After I run it in wood I may move up to a 14 or 16" bar.  It uses the same bars as the big box store Poulans, Wild Things etc. ;D ;D
