picked two more CS-440
« on: May 23, 2014, 01:53:51 pm »
These both need a new piston.  Cylinders will clean up.  One also needs a coil but at least I got that one for free.  Anybody know where you can get decent after market pistons?  Echo wants about $70.00 each Ouch! I good working order should get $150-$175 each

Thanks for the help,

Lee

Thats the only draw back I have found about echo. OEM parts are high just like stihl.
Then there is no aftermarket parts to buy for replacement for a cheap builder saw.

After dealing with my ordeal last summer with my CS600p when I NEEDED it operational and thereby becoming a small engine expert in the process, i can say that echo repair parts are priced just like any other real outdoor power equipment...the repair part prices dissuades folks like us from buying broken down equipment and repairing. Only way it would make sense to buy used condition-unknown equipment is when you can buy a piece from a dumpster dive or $10 or so, like I've seen in other threads. The repair part costs drive customers away from paying a dealer (or the DIY guy the same in parts) $225 to fix a $250 saw ...just throw the damn thing away (or strip the basic mechanicals and sell) and buy something else.

I have a semi-background in logistics and can say when you see the $100 carb, $150 block and piston, or $65 handle assembly, you are paying not only for the assembly part itself but for the low quantity production build of that assembly which costs alot more than regular production run, shipment from part-manufacturer to vendor, and all inventory costs. When you conveniently order that part you need from some place online, your also paying for the fact that they actually have it in stock. All additional costs always get pushed to the customer for repair parts. Same BS applies for repair parts with our cars and trucks.

Hope this helps out anyone wanting to do a resurrection build.

At Outdoorpowerparts.com a  CS440 piston and rings is 55.65 right now, I wouldn't even bother with a aftermarket one for around $30 even if they made one as Echo has high quality pistons.  When ordering online it's best to check different sites as the price can be quite a bit different.  Steve

Good advice Steve, as usual! However the link you provided does not work.

Try this link.  I see Echo is selling just the cylinders on some models instead of the whole shortblock, around $120 and $50 to $60 for a piston, not much worse than the better aftermarket kits on other saws.    Steve
