Olympyk 962
« on: March 24, 2018, 09:40:53 pm »
Hi, Would anyone know where I might find a recoil side cover for a 1997 Oly. 962. My saw has too much compression to reasonably try to pull start it so the side cover ripped off. Took it to the dealer and he said the compression problem couldn't be fixed. It did usually started easy, just have to stand on the saw with both feet and pull hard on the cord. If I can find a side cover I might try to get a few more years out of it. It's been a good saw. Just the usual maint. while I've had it. If I can't find a side cover it might become a parts saw. Thanks

I'm pretty sure that the 962 was equipped with a decompressor that should make starting the saw easy. You shouldn't have to stand on the saw to start it and it certainly shouldn't have so much compression that you would break a recoil attempting to start it. Sounds to me like your saw has some internal damage that is causing your symptom. What exactly did the dealer say was wrong with your saw that could not be fixed?

The starter assembly is still available from the manufacturer through several sources. Part number is 50012069DR.

Hi Deezl, I haven't ever seen a decompressor on my 962. The dealer that I took it to didn't see anything wrong with the saw. Once you get it started it runs as good as it ever did, that's why I don't want to part it out if I don't have to. Thanks for the part number. I'll look for one. Take care

So your saw has a steel plug here instead of a decompressor button? If so, you can remove the plug and install a decomp and your saw will will be much easier to start. Decomp buttons are available at just about any saw shop.

Deezl, I looked at that same location on my saw and there isn't anything there. I think I bought it in 1997. No sign of a plug. I'll try to send a picture now. Tried yesterday, didn't work out. Didn't work today either. File was too large I guess. I took the picture with my phone. Don't know how to make it smaller. But no plug.

Thanks Deezl, I'll go find out about the resizer. The new recoil cover came yesterday.  I ordered the part number you told me and it was the correct part.  Saw even seams to pull a little easier.  Been cold here in W. Mi. so will be using it right away. Thanks
