The last 2 weeks have been interesting. 2 weeks ago I parked my logging gear and went to work for the local Stihl dealer. Sold the forwarder today.

Is it a semi retirement or are you going to be working for them full time?

6 more years 2 months till I have a full retire at 66% after 30 years or buy 4 years of federal military time and get out in 2 years and about 4 months.

Now comes the hard part Art..
making 40 K instead of a 100...

Just got a lead on some work a little north of me, they cant find any loggers and the timber companies are begging
for wood to be cut, no bidding..

I could boogie any time I want on a fairly good pension ,not as much as working though .

Now the choice would come down to either going to work or listening to "honey do "stuff 24 and 7 . Can you imagine those people that have half a dozen wives .No body could take that . I have a hard enough time with one .

Its full time. Only been 2 weeks but alot of pain is going away already. Shop is going to be for sale in 5 years. Going to learn the business in case I may want to buy it.

At home I only have one non demanding wife, at work, I have planners and schedulers and they are like 12 needy ladies. At home I can leave, at work I'm forced to listen..

If I had any kind of pension I'd be cutting grass at a golf course... 14 years 4 months till its available...I'm sure it will go fast

Glad your healing Art, hand logging isn't an easy sport..

We have a winter lobster fishery. Season runs from the end of November to the end of May.

I didn't know that, is that all the Maritimes? I have a hankering and its got me thinking of them.

Imagine being on the Atlantic ocean during winter soaking wet all day, another good sport.

Is your shop in the rental biz also? that seems to be the local cottage industry here.

We are not into rentals. The owner sold his sales/rental business to Cat Rentals in 2006. Cat wanted to part with the sales side this spring so he bought it back.

One thing about the rental gig around here is I never see any of them go broke. One fella I know and used to do business with is a Pen guard on shift and his wife runs the office and in the last 3 years I'll bet hes acquired another 100 grand worth of mini high hoes and Kubota little stuff.
He does have 10 wood splitters which he wishes he had more in fall/spring...

the Vancouver Island summer va-kay is on hiatus, had a friend of a friend who runs a charter biz in Campbell River was gonna take us out for 200lb Halibut and in the last week the Alaskan kings were "ON" with 47 lb the biggest of the week. The 60lbers are in mid August when we would be there.Fresh shellfish to boot ...but oh NO

Downtown Toronto is now the destination

ball game,ROM,Science Center type stuff, anyhoo they have a spot called Fishermans wharf which is a takeoff of the San Fran version.
Last time there, you could get a LARGE pizza platter covered in Lobster/crab/all shell fish and a couple of chunks of fish. Its so big you can't see the people on the other side of the table...

It will feed 3 easy, and i been thinkin of that for a few weeks

I like good scallops, Art's neighborhood is some of the best, Bay of Fundy,
They are the size of urinal pucks, my buddy used to say
Even went picking clams in the mud there after tide, not a clean event.

When I was a little kid growing up on hood canal in Washington we used to have a oyster bed in our backyard. Fresh shucked that day by mom and a trout stream ran between houses next door that went into the canal. Used to catch cutthroat out of it. I guess that must be the place where I got my taste buds going.
Somewhere in Calif, San Bernardo I think, dad used to go diving for abalone.
Then as a 6th-8th grader lived in Norfolk Va and oh the seafood houses.

I live in a pretty good place for sure. I get all my seafood fresh off the boats. Sold most of my firewood to fishermen so I made some good contacts for life.

Alot of the bigger gear is being parked or sold off and being replaced with small crews running skidders and chainsaws. Only 2 feller/buncher crews left in my area. We only have 1 mill left south of Halifax and that keeps threatening to close. I was advised by their private wood buyer to get out while I could. NDP government is also waffling back and forth between a 50% and 100% ban on clear cutting phased in over the next 5 years. They admit that it will cause job loss but are courting the tree huggers as they have more votes. 70% of NS timberland is under private ownership. Hard to get big gear on private land today, many will only let tractors on their land. The end of industrial logging is on its way here.

I foresee in your area will realize its feller buncher or nothing..

Just called a logger looking for firewood logs and he said nothing till August1, they are waiting for the bark to harden??

Changing again. No traffic in the shop since the 1st week of Dec. Got laid off on Friday, going back 1st of April. Picked up a skidder job until then. Look out trees, an old man armed with Efcos is heading your way.
