But is it worth $500?

not to me thats for sure, but i'm sure somebody will jump on it if they wanted it bad enough. you'd be suprised how much people spend on this "hobby". $500 aint close to what some saws get.

Yea I put 2 little Homelite XL2's w/ no bar/chain on ebay for parts or not working. I winning bid was $54 for both.  I didnt think I could get my money back if I bought bar/chain for them and got them running.

What something is worth to someone is crazy at times.

There is a JD 66 twin = echo twin in the echo section here I posted pics of. I could have bought that saw for $425. I dint want or have a use for it. So I offered to a echo collector to pick it up for him. He wanted nothing to do with it either at that cost.

Thread   http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/echo/john-deere-66sv-echo-twin/

Some guy north of me bought it and flipped it on feebay. Some  ::):-X paid $900 on BIN for that saw  :o .   Unbelievable what some pay out there IMO.

I still wouldnt drive a hour there and hour back to just flip it for $475 profit minus whatever bay takes, but that is just me.
