Homelite XP 1000 followed me home today.

The recoil needs a little work but the saw seems to have some hope to run again.  Since these are 100cc saws are they considered a muscle saw or just kind of heavy for how well they cut??  When it comes back to life I have a Pro Mac 805 to compare it to.

If that Homelite is running right the Mac doesn't stand a chance .

The  Homey has 20 cc's on the Mac plus it's  a reed engine and will pull like Georgia mule .

The carb on this thing is an HL 197A. It seems carb kits may be a bit elusive, any ideas on where to find one?

The HL is a pretty standard carb .Fact being the later model rebuild kits as a rule with have mylar or whatever that material that is which is more  robust than buna-n for the check valves . The good old standby buna-n will work but they might not hold up as well as the newer kits  .Generally about 4-5 years if you are lucky .The ethanol in the the gas plays a number on the diaphragm and check valves .

Get the inserts that have lock tite on them .

They shouldn't have been tapped with a bottoming tap which goes all the way down .Had the tap been stopped about two threads up the inserts would not have came loose .

You have basically three tap forms ,starter ,taper and bottoming .The hole would have held were in done with a taper tap which would have left some metal for the insert to seat into  .It leaves a partial thread in the bottom of the hole .

Will lock tite stand up to the heat in that area?  I am thinking of making new tight fitting inserts out of 6061 aluminum, seating them and tig weld them in place.  It seems like a lot of fartin around for an old saw but then it is a 100cc's.
