John Deere 300CS
« on: April 25, 2015, 09:02:48 pm »
Guy trade one of these in on a saw I had for sale. He knew nothing about it, just said he couldn't crank it.  It belonged to his late father in law.
Upon further investigation, I noticed it was exceptionally clean with little run time. Bar and chain were dry, so I suspect a bad oil pump, but haven't checked it out. Surprised that it looks like it is made by Homelite? Has to be torn down really good to get to the oil pump.
All JD I have dealt with were Efco or Echo.
Anyone with experience with a JD 300CS?

Thinking it was JD that had bought Homelite out for it's chainsaws and OPE.  I got a big JD yellow homie trimmer.

Yep

1994 - John Deere acquires the Homelite Jacobsen products but the Jacobsen commercial products remain with Textron and remain today as a Textron company.
2001 - John Deere sales the Homelite brand to TTI, a Chinese conglomerate.

Been many years since I worked on a Homelite. Wonder how many people knew they were buying a Homelite at a John Deere price?
Glad I don't have a lot of money in this "Homelite" and wouldn't have even took it on trade had I known.

As I stated, been a long time since I worked on a Homelite chainsaw. Engine had a lot of movement inside case, and I discovered one mounting screw was broken and other two were loose.
One screw is behind the clutch and needs tightening or---- removal to replace broken screw in front.
Problem is, it has an outboard clutch and drum is retained by NUT instead of "E" clip. I am 90% sure it is a LEFT HAND THREAD but the other 10% leaves room for crankshaft breaking! ! !  It is very tight!
I have never encountered a RH thread in this type application but who can tell me for sure?
If I could see some threads on crank, I could tell.
