XL 12 questions
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:10:40 am »
Hey guys, iv got a old XL 12, runs great but it smokes alot! And drinks fuel like nobody's business, iv run this saw for years as it was my first saw. But I'm worried if there is something wrong with it, I can crank it and it will run for maybe 10 minutes before I refuel. Seems like its drinking to much? Or is it the norm for these old saws? My old C72 runs a little longer hahaha

It's a beauty with the bow

Does it smoke a lot?

What about 2 stroke - four stroke? Does it clean up to two stroke in the cut?

Possibly smoking is just the nature of the beast?

But this engine should have the needles set so the engine makes a fluttering sound just to pull the trigger and speed it up out of a cut.

When you stick the chain in the wood and the chainsaw starts cutting, the fluttering (4 stroke) sound should suddenly stop and the engine break into a smooth two stroke sound as it is cutting. If you lift up on the chainsaw, the four stroke fluttering should return. This is when the high speed needle is set correctly.

What oil are you using and what is your mix ratio?

You probabley have a puckered diaphragm on the carb and it's running just short of flooding blowing black smoke like it's burning soft coal .

When it's cold I run a 50:1 mix and when it's hot I run 32:1, went and bought another homelite XL 12 with a very good bow, it's the victim of bad gas, hopefully the $75 investment will be good, also GT a 361 poulan with a untouched bow, these bows look interchangeable

Run 32/1 in those saws all the time.  Also rebuild the carbs in all of them.  The diaphragms/gaskets in those carbs don't owe anyone a thing at this point, having put in decades of service.  RK-23HS if the carb is a Tillotson, and K10-SDC if they are Homelite/Walbro SDC carbs.  The bows will be interchangeable.

The studs on the Poulan will be 5/16" (instead of 3/8" as on the Homelites) and will require a stud spacer.  That's usually a flat spring 'S' shaped spacer.  You can also make those spacers out of a hardware store 3/8" extension coil spring.  Cut them about 4 coils long and slip 'em over the studs.  If the Homelite is an early XL-12 (usually blue/white, with a metal SN/MN tag rather than a sticker) then it may also have the smaller 5/16" studs.
