110 annealed copper sheet
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:55:19 pm »
We have been experiment with using 110 soft copper shim stock for base gaskets because gasket thickness can be very tightly controlled. We have had quite good results using copper. No gasket creep under pressure and a good seal.

The copper material is somewhat pricey but better control than factory/after market gaskets. Used to be used a lot for base gaskets in race motorcycles which is where the basic idea came from.

Just wondering what others think of this idea and if anyone else has used this method?

That is what i had to use in my pulling tractor it was 3-9/16" stock bore. we toss the sleeves and bore the block to       4-1/4" you cant get a gasket for that large of a bore it was a lot of hours with a die grinder cutting the copper .
I think i would use copper kote gasket spray on it copper is a little hard to keep sealed without it (might not be an issue with a saw we run outrageous compression)

Thanks for the copper kote tip! Don't know exactly what the compression will be when finished. Should know tomorrow since I will be doing the machining on the piston today. We need .0235 gasket to get .020 when assembled. We will be using two gaskets out of copper .012. So should be able to cut them out with gasket shears and a leather punch.

Both permatex and KW make the stuff. What brand do you suggest?
