181 wiring
« on: May 19, 2012, 09:39:14 am »
Hello everyone,
I'm a little new to chainsaw repair but I'm enjoying the learning. I recently got a husky 181 that is in good mechanical shape but has no stop switch. The original owner just choked it to shut it off and that's what I've been doing. I picked up a new switch to install but I can't figure out the wiring. The original owner removed the switch and changed the wiring. Does anyone have a wiring diagram or can someone explain what wires go where?
I appreciate all the information provided and look forward to get this saw running again.

John

There should be a spade tab electrical connector on the coil with nothing attached to it.

You must run a wire to this spade terminal and back to a switch and then to crankcase ground.

When the spade terminal is connected to ground, the ignition will not work. In other words, the switch is used to short out the magneto to kill the engine.

Thanks for the IPL,  but it doesn't show the actual connections. In other words, it doesn't show what wires actually connect to the switch.  The 181 switch has 2 spade terminals. Where do the wires come from that connect to it?  All current wires have been cut and respliced,so I can't tell what originally went where.

Thanks for the quick Replies!

I dont own a 181, so a WAG.

Is this how the 181 stop switch is guys?  2 spades on the on/off switch. 1 should go to the ground on the case somewhere and 1 to the coil spade.

As cut4fun said, one spade of the switch goes to a crankcase screw.

The wire on the other switch spade goes to the spade on the coil.

Ok. There is no ground wire now so I'll put one in and see how it does.
Thanks for the help!

Take heed that ground has be bonded to the actual engine for it to work .If I get a chance I'll take a peek at either a 181 or 281 I have in the shed . Can't remember which model it is except it needs seals which I've miss placed somehow which comes as no surprise .
