Manufacturers must all recommend 50:1 because that is the only way the saws will remain in emmisions compliance. So their hands are tied in that respect.

I run all my stuff at 40:1, and use good premium non-ethanol fuel, which is even more important than the extra oil IMO. I realize that it's not available in all areas, but if you can get it, it's worth the effort.

The extra oil is particularly friendly to the bottom ends of the saws. I think there's more benefit to the bearings than the top ends. Especially on strato charged saws.
