Chainsaw Repair

Picked up a real nice 240SG a while back, finally got around to it.  All it needed was cleaning, fuel line and carb. kit.  The fuel lines were melted filter stuck in the bottom of the tank.  Got the bright idea to use acetone to clean bottom of the tank.  Let it sit for a few minutes.  Came back to scrub the bottom of the tank and the paint was peeling around the gas cap opening.  I did not think acetone would do that, guess I was wrong.  What else should I have used?

Not outside paint I was cleaning inside the fuel tank.  The paint lifted in the gas cap hole.  When I dumped the acetone out of the fuel tank it also took the finish off the gas tank/handle and the metal starter where it dripped/splashed.  I usually use kerosene in my parts washer to clean saws.
