I believe the 298 was supposed to be a little lighter than the 2100cd, that is probably worth a laugh.  However the 298 did not have the manual oiler overide, so it wouldnt surprise me if the oil tank was smaller.  I believe there was some recoil differences as well, but will be a surprise as to what was changed out over the years & what wasn't.

As far as I know, it is correct that it was meant to be a lightweight version. The differenses from the 2100/2101 was the lack of a manuel oiler, and the lighter and more fragile starter/starter cover. The smaller diameter starter also made it harder to pull over. I am not sure if it had the same AV/bar support up front?
I have been told the lighter starters often failed, and were replased by 2100/2101 ones on warranty.

The model was only made for a short time, for the obvious reasons - while the production of the 2101xp continued for about 10 more years.

That's very interesting, I have never seen or heard of one out here in Oz, there bloody heaps of 2100's released here, I still have some today.
I wonder if the 298 was not offered for the Australian market.
What cc is the 298, I would be guessing the bottom end would be the same as the 2100.

Up above it states that the 298 is supposed to be a light weight 2100
