335XPT California Vs 338XPT

A friend has a low-time 335XPT California that's running strange.   I may be able to get it for peanuts.  He has basically nothing into it, and is sick of the damn thing.  Looks almost new. 

He sez the P/C look good through the port and that it's blowing good compression.  I'm thinking it may be the auto-decomp valve leaking (and would just plug the port in any case). 

Anyways.............are these worth messing with, and what are the differences between a California 335XPT and a 338XPT (whether Ca or not)?  I'd either fix 'n' flip it, or keep it for the rare times I'm up in a tree or in a bucket.

Al has a bunch of 335.  Al said something about oilers being a PITA.  Know nothing on the 335 Calif version, only a little on 338 Calif version posted here.  Otherwise I know squat.

I read the early 338 had less compression and ??  then the later NE New Edition 338. Also added side tensioner on NE.  Thats about all I know.


338 NE = from husky website new upgraded edition with increased compression ratio for more rapid acceleration and increased torque.

I think intakes were a issue too on 335.   Not sure ???

Thanks for the info Kevin.  Taking on that little bugger will probably be an exercise in frustration..............but I'm tempted for some reason.  It's a handy feeling little stinker, and is in such good shape (on the outside anyways)...

I've pulled some IPL's from the Husqvarna site as well.  Lots of changed part #'s.   One thing that I found interesting is  that the saw in question has the oval foam air filter setup (as seen in some earlier non-CA 335XPT IPL's).  All of the CA IPL's that I've seen so far show the later pleated paper/plastic filter.  This saw clearly has the "338XPT California" badging on the starter cover.

Not yet.  It's still at my bud's place.  Haven't yet decided to pull the trigger (and I was already hauling another bin of Husky parts out of his shed).  Should have snapped a cell pic or two, including one of the MN/SN tag.  I'll probably end up with it...

Just saving air filter info on these.  The newer air filter set up.

Air Filter Nylon Mesh #52 For Husqvarna 334T 335Xpt 338Xpt  shows all white  .  This filter has a #52 medium nylon mesh material on the surface that picks up sawdust and debris. This filter works well in clean cutting condition, and is recommended when cutting in sub freezing temperatures that would ice up a felt filter. These are oil-less filters. Air filters can load up quickly, so we recommend having a couple of spares handy. Fits the following chainsaws: Husqvarna 334 T, 335 XPT (after S/N 8500309), 338 XPT
