I'm pretty much a dummy on modifications.  I did a muffler mod on my 338XPT & am very pleased with the performance. It is now loud & Proud!  It generally will cough on the 3rn or 4th pull & if I am quick with the trigger it will take off on the same pull as the cough.  I haven't been using the purge bubble except on refills.  Holmen Trees didn't mention any thing about any changes other than the muffler mod & using .325 chain with a narrow kerf that I recall.  I have a lot of respect for him.

These 338s.....

I need some help with the auto decomp. can I just plug the damn thing, or will it be too hard to start?

Hmmmmm this has me wondering now.  What is the symptom of a auto decomp going or gone bad?

My 357xp was replaced with reg decomp before I got it and the 2 338xpt have never shown me any reason  to plug it. So what are the symptoms of a bad auto decomp?

Not completely sure this will work for the 338 but they are cheap. Came off a green machines weed whip, I think! I have used them before in situations where I had to make a 90° turn to avoid melting stuff. The bolt pattern is also the same or close enough to some of the <60cc Husqvarna saws.

The card in the background is where I got them from. Sometimes sells them on feebay! OBTW hole spacing 47mm ctc.

I need some help with the auto decomp. can I just plug the damn thing, or will it be too hard to start?

Just in case I ever have to disconnect auto decomp on one and use the plug.

What did you use for the  fitting under exhaust to plug it up?  Remove it and plug or another line on fitting and plug?

How did it pull over with plug installed and no decomp?

It started fine without the decomp. I don't remember what I plugged it with though.

There are OEM parts for that purpose, listed in the IPL dated 2006-09 and later .The 339xp New Edition came without the auto decomp, but with those parts installed. The parts that is needed are 503 55 22-01 and 537 18 00-01.

Looked at IPL. I have the plug for cylinder. Just not the deal below exhaust port.

Must be the plug 537180001 They call it protective cap.  ???  Looks like a vacuum cap type deal I used on cars. Cool.

It seems like we used a silicone based (heat resistant) cap and clamp. I had a bunch of that sort of stuff from a guy that does powdercoating and the caps and plugs he uses are heat resistant because of the baking process.
